Singaporeans coming back from overseas and tourists will pay lower Goods and Services Tax (GST) from 1st April, said Singapore Customs on Monday.

According to its media release, those who spent more than two days abroad will get GST relief for goods valued up to S$600, double the current S$300.

Those who were overseas for less than two days will get GST relief for goods valued up to S$150.

In addition, the age criteria for GST relief will be removed. Currently, the amount depends on the traveller’s age and the time he spends overseas.

Singapore Customs said the GST relief amount is increased to keep pace with rising expenditures and to bring relief amounts closer to international norms.

The new GST relief will apply to all travelers, including children. However, permit holders and crew members are excluded.

All goods brought into Singapore are subject to GST of seven per cent, with the exception of liquor, tobacco products, petroleum and goods imported for commercial purposes.
